The last week of September marks the annual celebration of National Employ Older Workers Week. With the number of people over 65 who are still working increasing, we see more and more that older workers need resources to find valuable employment and improve their economic standing. That was the case for senior Nora when she came to Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida (Fort Myers). She originally came in with some questions about accessing food stamps to ensure she can continue to pay her other bills and buy much-needed medicine.
September is Workforce Development Month, first celebrated in 2005 to raise awareness about the importance of our industry to a growing national economy. The month celebrates the contributions of workforce professionals and highlights events and initiatives that support job seekers and employers.
While Hispanic Heritage Month does span 30 days, it’s actually celebrated between two months. It starts September 15 and runs until October 15. After a lengthy break, Congress will return for a few weeks in September before adjourning again to hit the campaign trail. There are many items which Congress much address or take up during the lame duck session post-election. Congress must pass appropriations bills or a continuing resolution by September 30 to avoid a government shutdown. The House has passed 5 of 12 appropriations bills which the Senate has not passed any.

But for some, going back to school looks a little different. That was the case for Elliott, who first came to Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. (Nashville) after a friend recommended that he check it out. As a young man, he was right at the beginning of his career journey and trying to figure out what path to take. He was interested in getting some nationally recognized certifications to help him break into a new career field.
August 16th marks the two-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) – the wide-ranging package of climate, tax, and health care legislation that was signed into law in 2022. Specifically, the climate and energy provisions of the IRA created new opportunities to support the development of renewable energy sources, speed up the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), and deploy energy efficiency technologies in communities across the country.
