Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, Older Americans Month (OAM) is observed every May to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. This year’s OAM theme, Communities of Strength, celebrates the strength of older adults and the Aging Network, with special emphasis on the power of connection and engagement in building strong communities.

One such individual is Kevin, who lost his job during the pandemic. At the time, he lacked resources to repair his car and travel to interviews. For several weeks, he had looked for new employment, but he didn’t have the skills necessary to navigate the services for veterans in his area.
Goodwill Manasota — based out of Sarasota, FL — was thrilled to learn last December that it was one of 384 nonprofits to receive multi-million-dollar gifts from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. In the wake of its $10 million windfall, the Goodwill is launching new programs as well as expanding existing programs, including its Veterans and Their Families Program, which will now be staffed and ready to assist in Venice and North Port.

Congress has passed a number of measures that helped nonprofits during the pandemic, including measures that benefit those who donate to charities. In March 2020, Congress enacted a $300 charitable deduction for cash gifts from non-itemizers (those who take the standard charitable deduction) for 2020.

When Ceylin Brooks decided to leave the Air Force after serving for six years, she moved from the Hurlburt Field Air Force installation in Northwest Florida to Tampa. The transition to civilian life was a little difficult, especially when it came to looking for a job.
In Tucson, the team at Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona has been operating programs for individuals who have been involved with the justice system since 2012. Since that time, more than 500 individuals reentering the community have received services to address their many and varied needs.
President Biden used his address to a joint session of Congress to outline his vision for the American Families Plan. After signing the American Rescue Plan Act in March, the President unveiled an outline for the American Jobs Plan, a $2.3 trillion jobs and infrastructure proposal, which we outlined last month and would make major investments in the workforce system. The American Families Plan is the final piece of the three-part Build Back Better agenda.
