It’s August, which means it’s time to spiff up for the school year. Although the reality of the pandemic means that this coming school year might look a little bit different for a lot of us. So when we think about our typical back-to-school shopping trip — for whatever it might look like in the fall — the choices you make in your purchases might look a bit different this year, too.
If you’re new to thrifting, it can be very exciting to discover a whole new world of affordable and sustainable goods available at your fingertips. But let me tell you, as a thrifter of more than 40 years now, there are some things about my Goodwill® shopping style that have changed and evolved over the years.
Goodwill® has always been on the frontlines of helping people grow their skills, find new jobs and build their careers throughout our 118-year history. As the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic forced nearly all Goodwill organizations to temporarily close retail locations and other facilities, many have formed partnerships at the local level to respond to the crisis and help people get much-needed resources.
Goodwill® Week has taken place the first full week of May since 1951. In years past, local Goodwill organizations around the United States and Canada would host career fairs, donation drives, tours of their facilities and services, and other community-wide events to commemorate the week. While it is understandably difficult to celebrate during this time of crisis, it’s important to highlight the contributions that Goodwill and other charitable nonprofits continue to make in their communities.
Healthcare workers are fighting a shortage of protective masks, but other personal protective equipment (PPE) items are also in reduced supply, such as scrubs, smocks and face shields. Not having these necessities has been a huge hurdle in battling the coronavirus.

The goal of the Huntington Sustainability Fair Project is to support a vibrant and sustainable local economy. Goodwill KYOWVA wanted to make the fair more expansive and inclusive event involving more community partners and expand the interest, reach and involvement by providing education and options available to people in the area to increase ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Like a lot of parents of young kids, we don’t get out a whole lot. When you’re on a tight budget that includes monthly childcare that costs more than your mortgage, it’s hard to justify hiring a sitter for just about anything. But as Valentine’s Day approaches and cold, wintry nights take hold, we decided to made an exception to our normal rule.
