We have officially hit mid-November – Veterans Day was commemorated this week and as I write, the newly elected lawmakers have come to Washington while votes from the mid-term election are still being counted or re-counted in 11 house and senate races. The freshman class of elected officials is in D.C. to begin congressional orientation, and includes 16 veterans among the 150 veterans who ran. Among the many firsts in the 116th Congress are four women veterans, which may bring the women’s military service caucus to its highest ever at around six women.
Patriece Fountain was on move number seven when she and her family came to Hampton Roads in October 2017. As a military spouse, this was nothing new. While constant relocation was something she could manage, the effect it had on her employment was beyond her control.

At Everglades University, students, staff and faculty choose a nonprofit to support each month. The Suits for Vets charitable effort was a particularly good fit for the campus: Everglades University is a yellow ribbon school, serving many veterans who are on campus getting their education after serving our country. The partnership was cemented after school representatives visited the Veterans Services Program office and heard how Goodwill works to address critical needs of the local veteran population.

If you’ve ever felt your age was a hindrance in getting hired, today’s blog is for you. Ageism, like racism and other forms of discrimination, exist to varying degrees in our imperfect world. Rarely will an employer blatantly tell you you’re too old, but it’s a clear sense you get. Frankly, failing to generate an interview for a job where you’re clearly qualified, could also be due to age discrimination.
As someone who loves soaking up sunshine and warm weather, you better believe that the first gust of dropping temperatures has got me feeling a certain type of way. When full on fall and winter weather hit - I know the only thing that will help me stay warm while keeping my cool is layering up with all things cozy. Fortunately, the stars aligned this season and layering, especially with fun plaid blazers, provides the opportunity to create some fun, chic looks while staying on trend.
Because I’m a policy wonk and I’m competitive, I entered an election challenge being run by Politico. I looked at polls, did my research, and made my projections on a number of races in the House and Senate.
In the minds of many, Goodwill® is the place to drop off donations and shop at cheaper prices. The nonprofit organization brings a lot more to the table, though. Goodwill’s overarching mission is to help community members find jobs. Goodwill Southeast Georgia serves 29 counties in Georgia and four counties in South Carolina. That area coverage includes 17 retail stores and four career centers. The Job Connection Center, located directly beside the Goodwill store in Brunswick, located at 249 Village at Glynn Place, offers workshops, professional development, GED courses and computer access. The center’s staff provides résumé and interviewing skills training and teach courses in hospitality training, soft skills development and computer skills.
